Plasticizers (also commonly referred to as surfactants) are designed to wet out the constituents in concrete mixes and improve the workability or flow ability of the concrete, resulting in improved densities and productivity, i.e. faster mold or machine fill times.

Each type of plasticizer has defined ranges for the required quantities of concrete mix ingredients, along with the corresponding plasticizing effects.  They can maintain a specific consistency and workability at a greatly reduced amount of water, or allow increase water usage in low or zero slump conditions.  Dosages needed vary by the particular concrete mix and type of plasticizer used.
